THOMAS J. NICHOLS
The Third Dawn
Tom is a graduate of the University of Arizona,
magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration. After
serving twenty-two years with the Tucson Police Department, he retired in
1983 as Deputy Chief of Police. He moved to Lubbock, Texas where he assumed
command as Chief of Police and remained in that position until he retired in
1990. His
criminal justice profession continued when Chief Nichols started a new
career with the Lubbock School District where he created a full-service
police department to serve the particular issues surrounding the concerns
for the safety of teachers and children in an academic setting.
Over the years, Tom produced numerous criminal justice related policies,
procedures, and professional articles for regional and national
publications. A lifetime member of the International Association of Chiefs
of Police, he is a member of the Police Executive Research Forum, Texas
Police Chiefs Association, and other professional organizations. A member of
the scholastic honor societies Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma, Tom has
been an active community worker serving on the boards of directors of
Hospice of Lubbock and the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. He is a Paul Harris
Rotarian, and currently is on the Board of Directors of the Lubbock Rotary
Club. He has served as a member of the Serra Club, and is a Knight of the
Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, two organizations that serve the special needs
of Christianity.
Among his many book signings, Chief Nichols had highly successful
ventures at Clues Unlimited/Tucson; Barnes & Noble/Lubbock; and, at the
Lyndon Baines Johnson Library/Austin.
Tom enjoys hobbies of physical exercise, bird hunting, hiking, and
fly-fishing throughout the Rocky Mountains.
Tom and his wife Gwendolyon live in Lubbock, Texas. They have two grown
children, Jennifer and James, who live in the Dallas area.
